Subsistence harvest and use of brown bear by southeast Alaskans. Although today brown bear are hunted primarily for sport and trophy, Alaskan Natives have harvested brown bear for food, clothing, tools, and other purposes for centuries.

Traditionally, brown bear hunting among Natives was surrounded by numerous. Alaska is home to approximately 70% of brown bears in North America while portions of Southeast Alaska have some of the highest densities of brown bears in the world (ADF&G ). Brown bears are valued for both consumptive uses including sport and subsistence hunting and non-consumptive uses like wildlife viewing.

Food. Brown bears are very adaptable and like humans, they consume a wide variety of foods. Common foods include salmon, berries, grasses, sedges, cow parsnip, ground squirrels, carrion, and roots. In many parts of Alaska, brown bears are capable predators of moose and caribou, especially newborns.
